In 2023, we had the immense pleasure of joining Google to lead the design of Google Sans Flex, the evolution of Google Sans—originally developed by Colophon and later continued by Font Bureau.
GSF is Google’s new corporate typeface, and one of the main pillars of the new Material Expressive design system, where the classic approach to brand systems is blown wide open to make room for a flexible, highly expressive, versatile, and universal brand. From a technical standpoint, Google Sans Flex is one of the most complex typefaces ever made, with six variation axes and more than 200 masters.
On this journey, we were by no means alone. Still, there are too many credits to include here—and there’s no need, since Google has done it better than we could. To see everyone involved, click here. That said, we do want to express our thanks and highlight, among all those people, Juan Luis Blanco, MarĂa Ramos and Bogidar Mascareñas, Joana Correia, Joancarles Casasin, Dave Crossland, and the Glyphs team—Georg Seifert and Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer.
